Job Description

The Lou Malnati's PR Manager leads the development and execution of strategic public relations initiatives to maintain and enhance the positive image of the Lou Malnati's pizza brand, with ownership of media relations, community engagement, crisis communication, and brand storytelling. This role sits within the Communications department and partners closely with Marketing to ensure aligned, consistent brand messaging. The PR Manager reports directly to the VP of Communications, sets PR strategy and priorities in partnership with that office, and upholds the legacy of Chicago-style deep dish pizza in every external-facing initiative.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Media Relations

  • Own the media relations strategy, directing the pitching of stories and securing placements in local, regional, and national media outlets (print, broadcast, online, podcasts, YouTube channels).
  • Serve as a primary company spokesperson and final point of escalation for media inquiries, ensuring accurate, on-brand information about the company, new menu items, promotions, and special events.
  • Cultivate and maintain senior-level relationships with journalists and food critics across traditional and non-traditional media channels.
  • Set standards for and oversee in-store media filming, ensuring coverage serves the company's best interest while supporting store teams in managing media so it doesn't disrupt guests, team members, or business operations.
  • Track and analyze media mentions (impressions, value, sentiment, etc.) and report results and recommendations to the VP of Communications and senior leadership.

Brand Storytelling

  • Lead the development of compelling narratives highlighting the history, mission/vision message, quality, and unique aspects of Lou Malnati's pizza.
  • Guide and approve engaging content across channels including press releases, social media, the website, and company newsletters, ensuring a consistent brand voice.

Community Engagement

  • Set the community engagement strategy, building and maintaining relationships with local organizations for events and initiatives.
  • Lead philanthropic efforts and represent the company's commitment to the community, including managing the relationship with Lou Malnati's annual Cancer Research Benefit.

Crisis Communication

  • Own and continuously refine the company's crisis communication plans, serving as lead point of contact for addressing potential negative publicity and briefing executive leadership in real time.
  • Partner with social media monitoring agency for emerging issues, ensuring prompt and appropriate response.

Social Media Partnership

  • Partner with the company's Social Media Manager to develop engaging, compelling content that enhances Lou Malnati's presence across social and media platforms, ensuring PR and social strategies are fully aligned.
  • Search, connect with, and work with social media influencers to get earned mentions, promoting the awareness and trial of the brand.

Event Planning & Team Leadership

  • Oversee the coordination and management of press events, grand openings, promotional activities, employee events, community events, and the Lou Malnati's annual Cancer Research Benefit.
  • Manage day-to-day work and development of any interns, as well as external PR agencies or freelance partners.
  • Manage the PR department budget and vendor relationships in coordination with the VP of Communications.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least five years of progressive experience in public relations, including experience managing people and/or external partners, preferably within the food service industry.
  • Proven ability to set and execute PR strategy in partnership with senior leadership.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills with the ability to craft compelling narratives.
  • Strong media relations skills and established, senior-level contacts with relevant journalists.
  • Deep understanding of social media platforms and strategies for engagement.
  • Crisis communication expertise and demonstrated ability to lead through sensitive situations.
  • On-camera presence that aligns with Lou Malnati's brand and core values.
  • Ability to generate fun, engaging, and newsworthy ideas, content, and experiences that build brand awareness, positive media attention, and guest engagement.
  • Experience managing budgets, vendors, and/or direct reports.
  • Event planning and coordination expertise.
  • Deep knowledge of Chicago food culture and the Lou Malnati's brand identity.
